10-Day Unit

I just wanted to briefly talk about some of the things going on in my 10-day unit. I decided not to post my journals because I talk about specific instances during class and I would rather not post them online.

My class had a debate about Abigail Williams from The Crucible. I was so proud on the day that so many students were able to come up with a bunch of supporting evidence. On the day of the debate, I told the students they would receive a point for each valid point they could make towards their argument, and receive an additional point if they could find supporting evidence for their claim in the text. This was a good call by Ms. Covelli because the students were flipping through the pages of their text books throughout the debate in order to find evidence.

I was very proud when a few select students came up with points I hadn't even thought of! This day was extremely rewarding for me.

  1. Don't you just love when a lesson plan turns out the way you want it to? I know I enjoy it. There are those lesson plans that just flop, but the ones that work out make the job of being a teacher so rewarding and exciting! I think it's days like these that push us through days that aren't as successful.

  2. Marissa,

I'm so glad that your student teaching experience is improving. Isn't it great how those little moments can make such a huge impact upon your entire day? When Dr. Kist came in to observe my class, he and I were both very impressed by the fact that my students touched on all of the points and more than I had planned to discuss during an activity. It's incredible how intelligent these kids are!

I wish you the best of luck for the rest of your semester as you prepare for the "full teaching experience."

    Take care,

    Dave

  3. I totally know what you mean! My students had a debate on the 28th and all three of my classes ran up until the bell and we had to finish them the next day. Students LOVE debates, and if there's enough competitiveness in the class, they'll do just about anything to win the argument...even...omg...refer to the text!

    Congrats! :-)
